Manx Utilities extends it’s capacity

December  2025 and The Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure and Manx Utilities took delivery of the second of 2 new custom adapted Long-wheelbase Unimogs.  The standard long-wheelbase U535’s received our factory approved extension to 4500mm to accommodate pole carrying bolsters, a Palfinger crane and custom body.  No handover is complete, of course, without some dedicated handover training from our own MD, Tony Levitt who flew to the island to demonstrate the new vehicles extraordinary abilities to the new working team.

Before all of that though, a significant amount of design and fabrication was required to turn these two amazing Mogs into the kind of vehicle that would meet the clients exacting requirements:  With factory approved extended wheelbases up to 4500mm, a heavy-duty subframe to match, custom built rear bodies, Palfinger cranes, pole carriers and winches, they are perfectly suited to a rugged and specialised, off-road working environment on the island.

Take a look at some of the many Unimog attachments, modifications, customisations, tools and fabrications that we produce here at South Cave Tractors Ltd.

In every issue of the newsletter, we plan to focus on a fascinating and unique feature or new technical innovation.  This time, we are looking at CTIS

Preset Pressure Options in dash display
Unimogs famous Central Tyre Inflation System (or CTIS) is one of the key features that make Unimog so special off-road.  It has long been known that by dropping your vehicles tyre pressures you can dramatically reduce your vehicle ground pressure and at the same time, increase your mechanical grip on any surface.

While other manufacturers have offered a cumbersome and impractical, external, flexible airline outside the tyre, only Unimog offers a fully integrated system that allows the operator the options to adjust pressures while on the roll with a computer controlled selection of pressure choices.

Each pressure setting has its own pre-determined speed limit.  If you exceed that limit or forget to increase your pressure before returning to the road, then the system will begin to increase the tyre pressure to ensure optimum safety, vehicle control, braking efficiency and fuel economy are maintained.
